Barbara brings Cadyn
Elizabeth to her first party at Frozen Egg Bank, Inc October 19, 2005
After making the decision to postpone having children until she was older, Barbara, a resident of Orange County, is now the proud mother of a beautiful baby girl, Cadyn Elizabeth was born at St. Joseph Hospital in Orange, California on October 6, 2005 at 8:45 pm, weighing in at 5 lbs and 15 oz. Barbara, who is 43, is a true modern-day pioneer as the birth of Cadyn is West Coast Fertility Center’s first frozen egg pregnancy, and one of fewer than 100 births from frozen eggs in the world. Human eggs (oocytes) are different from embryos in that they are unfertilized at the moment of freezing. The donated eggs used by Barbara had been stored for a number of years in the Center’s laboratory. Many women wait until they reach their 30’s or early 40’s before having children. Barbara felt she had plenty of time to get pregnant, but when she hit 40 and nothing had happened, she decided it was time to get medical help. She tried fertility treatments, including in vitro fertilization with her own eggs, but with no success. She consulted her obstetrician, and he suggested she seek help from Dr. David Diaz , Medical Director of Frozen Egg Bank, Inc. During her consultation, Dr. advised Barbara that given her age, coupled with failed IVF attempts, that using donor eggs was the recommended fertility treatment. Dr. explained the traditional donor egg process and also discussed the Center’s work with freezing unfertilized eggs. Barbara decided that using donated frozen eggs was the best option for her as she could proceed more quickly, plus in the long run it would be more cost-effective. Dr. explains, “The cost of securing unfertilized eggs from our egg bank is less than proceeding with a traditional egg donor. This is because the cost of using donated eggs, which can run into thousands of dollars, can be shared among a number of patients.” Barbara is ecstatic that she is a new mother, something she believed would never happen. “Having my dream of becoming a mother come true is fantastic,” exclaimed Barbara. “At one point I thought having a baby was not going to happen for me, but with the advances in treatment at Frozen Egg Bank, Inc, miracles are possible,” she says. “Women should not give up hope,” advises Barbara. Dr. and his scientific staff are delighted that Barbara and her baby are healthy and doing well. “We are so happy for Barbara,” says Dr. . “Barbara has been an incredible patient and is now a member of the Centers’ extended family.” The Center is planning to expand the program so that more women can know
about this reproductive option. “Egg banking, much like sperm banking, gives
hope to women like Barbara, who delay pregnancy for personal or career reasons.
Women may also choose to store their eggs if they are candidates for cancer
treatment, or if they have ethical concerns about freezing embryos,” says Dr.
